Effective [launch date]Terms of Service
1. Who we are
Zettel is operated by [legal entity name], [registered address] (“Zettel”, “we”, “us”). These Terms are an agreement between you and us. By creating an account or using Zettel (the “Service”), you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not accept them, do not use the Service.
2. Who can use Zettel
- You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use the Service.
- You may hold one account. The information you give us must be accurate.
- You may not use the Service if the law where you live forbids it, or if we have closed an account of yours before.
3. Your account
- Keep your sign-in details private. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- Tell us at support@zettel.study if you think someone else is using your account.
4. What Zettel does
Zettel is an AI teacher. It talks with you, by voice or text, and builds interactive worlds on a shared stage to teach you what you want to learn. The Teacher, its voice, and the worlds it builds are produced by artificial intelligence models from third-party providers, as the Privacy Policy describes.
- AI can be wrong. Lessons, explanations, answers, and worlds are generated automatically. They can contain mistakes or omissions. Check anything important against a reliable source.
- Not professional advice. The Service is for learning. It does not give medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice, and it does not replace a qualified professional.
- Voice. Voice lessons need access to your microphone. Your speech is sent to our voice provider while you talk, as the Privacy Policy explains. You can turn the microphone off and type instead.
- Changes. We improve the Service continuously. Features can change, and some may be labelled as early or experimental.
5. Plans, lesson time and payment
Zettel measures use in lesson time: the minutes you are present in an active lesson, whether you talk or type.
- Free start. Each new account receives [free lesson time] of lesson time once, with no payment card.
- Subscription. The Zettel plan costs [monthly price] a month or [annual price] a year, plus any applicable tax. It includes [included lesson time] of lesson time per month. Unused included time rolls over to the next month, up to [rollover cap].
- Beta accounts. An account opened before paid plans began keeps the Zettel plan, with the lesson time it includes, at no charge for as long as the plan stays active. If you cancel it, it ends like any plan.
- Top-ups. You can buy more lesson time at [top-up price] for [top-up lesson time]. Top-up time does not expire while your account is open.
- When time runs out. The current turn of the lesson finishes. To continue, you can buy a top-up or wait for your plan to renew.
- Billing. Stripe processes payments for us. Subscriptions are charged in advance and renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in your account settings; the plan then stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
- Failed renewal. If a renewal payment fails, you keep [grace lesson time] of lesson time for 3 days while you update your payment details. After that, the plan pauses until payment succeeds.
- Price changes. We will tell you at least 30 days before a price change applies to your subscription. You can cancel before it takes effect.
- Refunds. Payments are not refundable, except where these Terms or the law say otherwise. If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK, you may withdraw from a purchase within 14 days. When you start using paid lesson time within that period, you ask us to begin at once, and a refund on withdrawal is reduced by the lesson time you have used.
6. Your content
“Your content” is what you put into Zettel: the goals and messages you type, what you say in voice lessons, files and links you add, and your work inside worlds. You keep ownership of your content.
- You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host, store, process, and transmit your content only to operate, secure, and improve the Service for you. This includes sending it to the service providers named in the Privacy Policy, such as our AI model providers.
- You confirm that you have the right to add the files and links you add, and that they do not break the law.
- This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies the Privacy Policy says we keep.
7. What Zettel makes for you
Lessons, the Teacher’s words and voice, and the worlds built for you are generated by the Service. You may use them for your own learning, and you may share them through the replay feature. We do not promise that generated material is unique, and similar material may be generated for other learners. The software, design, and know-how behind the Service remain ours.
8. Sharing a lesson replay
- You choose whether to publish a replay of a lesson. Anyone who has the link can watch a published replay without an account.
- A published replay shows the Teacher’s words and voice and pictures of the stage. It does not include recordings of your voice or a transcript of what you said or typed. The Teacher’s words can repeat what you said, and the stage can show your work, so watch a replay before you publish it.
- You can unpublish a replay at any time. Deleting the lesson or your account also withdraws its link.
- You are responsible for what you choose to publish.
9. Acceptable use
You may not use the Service to:
- break the law, or infringe anyone’s intellectual property, privacy, or other rights;
- harass, threaten, or harm anyone, or to create content that sexualises minors;
- generate content that gives serious uplift to weapons capable of mass casualties, or content that the AI model providers’ usage policies forbid;
- get around lesson-time allowances, rate limits, or security controls, or access another person’s account or data;
- scrape, copy, resell, or give automated access to the Service, unless we agree in writing;
- reverse engineer the Service, except as the law allows;
- upload malware, or interfere with the Service or its infrastructure.
10. Third-party content and services
Lessons can show material from public sources, such as images from Wikimedia Commons or videos you link. That material belongs to its owners and has its own licence terms. Signing in with Google or GitHub, and paying through Stripe, are also subject to those companies’ terms.
11. Feedback
If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without any obligation to you.
12. Suspension and closing your account
- You can delete your account at any time from your account settings.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms, puts other people or the Service at risk, or where the law requires it. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you first and explain why.
- If we close your account without a breach by you, we will refund the unused part of any subscription period you have paid for.
13. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties about the Service, including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that generated content will be accurate or fit a particular purpose. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by contract.
14. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential losses, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim about the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 50 US dollars. These limits do not apply to liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of [governing law jurisdiction], and disputes go to the courts of [courts]. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in your local courts.
16. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. For a material change, we will tell you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you keep using the Service after that date, the new Terms apply. If you do not agree, you can cancel and delete your account before then.
